King Charles Formally Strips Prince Andrew of HRH Style and Prince Title

Through a definitive move, King Charles has formally removed the former Duke of York of his Royal Highness attribute and his title of prince.

The changes were made official by issuing letters patent under the official state seal, which were recorded in the Gazette.

The entry declared: “The king has been pleased by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”

A separate record confirmed the stripping of the Duke of York from the peerage list, effective immediately.

The notice stated: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to direct his secretary of state to ensure the titleholder to be struck from the roll of the peerage.”

Context of the Decision

The decision follows mounting controversy over the former prince's links to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

Giuffre alleged that she was assaulted by the former prince after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Andrew has always strenuously denied.

Procedure of Removing Titles

Charles employed his royal prerogative—recognized authorities held by the sovereign—after consultation with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through legislative action.

Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to bestow or remove titles and honors.

Since the Royal Highness designation is granted by letters patent, it can be revoked through the same instrument.

Additional Measures and Backing

Following the initial announcement, the senior legal official was directed to draft the necessary documents for the removal of titles.

The decision also involves Mountbatten Windsor giving up his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a thirty-room Crown Estate property where he has lived for two decades.

Officials endorsed the king's decision.

Retained Honor

In spite of the loss of titles, it was announced that Andrew will retain his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
