The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a university in the United States.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with results revealed on Tuesday.

Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the future president was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response categorically refuted that any person acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The student stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained the elected leader.

His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Responses

On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the society on a related program broadcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement warned that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
